I was down in the seasonal section of our store yesterday checking out the new line of MTD snowblowers we carry this year and was noticing that the Briggs & Stratton Snow series of engines are larger than the Tecumsehs they replaced. A quick chat with the manager in that department had me scratching my head. He tells the 250CC is about 6.5hp(my OH195sa by comparison is 7HP), the 305cc is 10.5hp and the 342cc is 13.5hp. Size to powerwise that would make the Tecumsehs a more efficient engine. Anyone know how well the Brigss & Stratton are holding up and how they work by comparison? More out of curiousity than anything else.

HP numbers are a difficult thing to compare and pin down. Some engines are rated at the same HP but at different RPM's. B&S typically rates their engines at a specific HP at higher RPM's than say a Honda, not sure about the Tecumseh brand. B&S engines have been good sturdy units in the past, probably still are.
My Tecunseh has lasted 22 years withoutout a problem. Does a quarter mile cul de sac every snow from curb to curb and three driveways. The engine is an 8 HP. Even if it failed now, I'd think it had done a superb job!!
And don't they have to make parts available for 10 years after discontinuing manufacture?? Or is that just autos?

What parts, the [censored] thing is just a venturi with a float and governor, waiting to plug the main jet. Hate 'em.....I guess it is not their fault nobody drains the gas.

IMO, it makes no difference on an MTD snowblower; Briggs or Tecumseh. Pick which ever plastic or color scheme you prefer. Maintained properly, the machine itself will still fail before any hard parts on the engines give up the ghost. I'd get which ever is OHV. It's been my experience that they are more fuel efficient, easier to start, smoother and quieter than a flat head powered machine.

I'm not in the market for a new snowblower, I just bought one last year, although my brother-in-law is looking. I'm actually impressed with the OH195SA on my snowblower, for both power & efficiency. I was curious as to how Briggs was doing with their new line up, afterall the last Briggs built snow engines was back in the 60's, Tecumseh has owned the market since. I had heard the rumours about Tecumseh shutting down, but haven't seen any news releases to that effect.

I've run some power washers with the smaller briggs OHV engines. They did well. I know Sears has been using OHV Briggs on some of their snowblowers for at least 6yrs now. Only on the non-MTD Sears units though. I believe the non-MTD Sears throwers/blowers are either a Murray design (out of business) or AYP/Poulan/Electrolux. Yeah, other than that, the last briggs flat-head snowblower was a good 30yrs ago.
