02 Wrangler 4.0 I'm almost due for an oil change. I have a case of SJ Havoline SAE30. It was 85F @ 8am this morning and now it's 98F. It will only get hotter untill Sept. July and August won't drop below 105F at night and daytime will be 115F-120F. The 3yr/36k warranty is over so thats not a valid reason not to use the stuff. [Big Grin]

I wouldn't run it because you will see increased wear until the oil is up to temperature. Use it for your lawn mower!

Many try to blame start-up wear only on thick oil viscosity at start-up. The corrosive wear from over rich fuel conditons & the generated acids at start-up, is as much a factor as the oil viscosity. Here is a temperature chart comparing Havoline 5W-30 & 10W-30 actual viscosities to a SAE 30 HD.
code:
Temp	Viscosity in cSt
C	F	5W-30	10W-30	SAE 30
0	32	573	814	1213
5	41	403	556	786
10	50	293	389	526
15	59	218	280	363
20	68	165	206	257
25	77	127	155	187
30	86	100	118	139

At a 86F degree start-up temp, Havoline SAE 30 HD is actually thinner than a 5W-30 at 68F degrees. If the 5W-30 is not generating excess wear at 68F, how could the SAE 30 be too thick at 86F? [Smile]

At those temperatures, run straight 30 and rest easy. Up much over 125 F., you might even want to think about a 40.

Ok now another one. I just went out to the garage and dug up. 2 gallons of Exxon Superflow 20w-50, 12 qts of Napa 20w-50 and 4 qts of Havoline 20w-50. Too thick for the Jeep? I run 20w-50 in my old pickup and it does bring the oil pressure up to acceptable levels. Save it for the truck only? What about using the 20w-50 in my air cooled quad?

Darn it Blue99, why did you have to come in here and injest some facts? Don't listen to him Chris. You're still looking at 10 times the startup wear from that super thick motor honey. Better go with 5w-20 so you don't scuff a piston from cold starting at 100 degrees F [Big Grin]

The biggest supplier of lube and fuel here is Goodspeed which is a Chevron distributer. My guess is they farm out maintenance on the equipment and most likely they get Chevron products. Prolly Delo 15w-40 in the diesels?

My instructor at college in Chico, CA(71 Mustang) and my brother in law in Lake Havasu, AZ(80 Dodge D-50) used any SAE 30 available. Mustang was over 225,000 and D-50 was 300 plus last I heard. Go for it!

My friend uses SAE 30 in his 4.0L Cherokee and Grand Cherokee year round! He just did a rebuild on the engine at 180,000, probably because he pushes the 4.0L to its limits (well, I do too but I use 15W40)

My YJ trail Jeep currently has Chevon Delo400 SAE30. I've had it in since the middle of March. Even then, when it was cooler (actually, it's only about 42 outside right now) my Jeep would have immediate oil pressure. Your 4.0L will be fine on 30 weight. Also, with those summer temps you posted, you could step up to the 20W50 any not worry as well. In fact, that's probably what I would use if it was that hot here.
