My '88 F-150 w/4.9 FI-6 has about 160K miles on it. I've been using Pensoil 10W-30 and I'm thinking of switching to a synthetic oil. Probably Wal Mart Super Tech for the price. Is this ok for a high milage engine. Thanks.

I fail to see why you want to switch. Why? If for extended drains....not sure you'll be buying much. Cold starts?

Sure it's OK as long as your car isn't leaking or guzzling oil.

My understanding is the synthetic oils offer better lubrication, so I'm thinking this may extend my engine life.
Engine does use some oil. Leaks alittle, probably burns some. About a qt. every 2-3 weeks. Mostly highway miles w/average of 300 miles per week.

To play it really safe you could run the high mileage Maxlife Synthetic, but if you have no leaks you should be okay with any synthetic I would think.

What's the issue w/leaks? Will syntetic cause worse leaks? Any other problems I might need to be aware of?

If you have leaks, synthetic is supposed to maybe accentuate them. Mainly from cleaning off of crud from the seals. That's why Valvoline recommends the HM Maxlife Synthetic over Synpower for older vehicles. Not sure it is a really big issue though. I ran Synpower and NAPA synthetic in wife's Aerostar at 105,000 miles and haven't seen any leaks develop (didn't have any to begine with either).

I am not an expert on oil!
I did start using Synthetic in my string of older Motorhomes. I had an 89 454 that had over 50 -k. When I switched to Synthetic the rear main started to leak a bit.The members on my RV forum convinced me to stick with the Synthetic and sure enough the leak went away. My Brother-in-law is still driving that old rig with Mobil1 and no leaks.

Super Tech synthetic is fine for 5K OCIs with your driving miles. Others have used it longer with success. I don't use it.... but I may consider the ST High Mileage Synthetic someday for an older vehicle I have.

I heard from many people that if you have been using dino all your motors life up to 100k and decide to switch to synthetic it is not good. of course these facts cant be proven by me. the analogy they use is., your engine was using glue as lubricant and now u switch it to water. this is my point of view. but if everything seems to be fine let us know. if it doesnt let us know too please

1 week and so far, so good. No leaking or comsumption that I've noticed. And some lifter noise that I had on start up is gone.

I'd Auto-RX TWICE prior to switching to clean up the deposits and to condition the seals to ensure that they won't leak.

Pour it in and forget it. I thought that was pretty much a dead issue here. I've switched many 150k+ engines over to M1 without issue.
