i bought some syntec 5w-20 to run in my 03 f-150 5.4l......would it do me any good to add some moly to it as the voa's have showed it virtually has none??
I agree with Haley. There have been some pretty good Syntec UOA here lately. At the very least I would use it for 2-3 OCI and do an analysis on the third interval to get an idea of how it's doing.
yup, give it a try without any adds for a couple oci's, do a uoa on your second or third oci and then if you are not satisfied with the results, put in your adds and resample
Oh lord! let's not get into this "discussion" again! This topic has been beaten to death and we still end up with the same opposing sides. The group that insists that for every engine "thickerer is betterer" and the open minded group that accepts that in cetain engines the newer higher quality Ford spec'd 5W-20 oils produce really good UOA's and may actually be good for the engine
. And are better quality oils than DINO 5W-30's in general. Just because the engine originally was spec'd for DINO 5W-30 was because the higher quality Ford spec'd 5W-20 oil didn't exist until mid 2001. And yes I know that one of the driving forces was to help the MPG's but does coming out with a higher quality oil in the SAME price range as the previously recommended oil make it a bad oil? If you say yes then the same could be said for every "new" oil that followed the SA grade oils
. If your engine was oringinally spec'd for 5W-30 and you are comfortable using it do so. Although I use Motorcraft 5W-20 in my 2002 Ford truck with the 4.6L V-8 I still use 5W-30 in my 1996 Ford Contour with the 2.0L Zetec. It was originally spec'd for dino 5W-30 but I've been using synthetic since almost new and will keep using 5W-30 synthetics because I feel "comfortable" doing so. In fact I'm now trying out Schaeffers 5W-30 blend, even though Ford says I can use their grade 5W-20. However if I was to revert back to a dino oil I would use the Motorcraft 5w-20. I better get off this computer now ....
