From what I've read I should run dino oil in my new 5.3 L engine until I have about 3000 miles and then switch to Synthetic . That means I will be driving with dino from now [mid October] until about January [ here in Illinois] before I reach that many miles. Would any certain dino brand and weight be selected that would be better in making this transition ?

Pennzoil 5w30 has pretty good cold weather specs. Although why not just switch to synthetic at 2000 miles so you've got it in there in time for the cold weather?

From other posts I read that I should run dino oil until at least 3000 miles when the rings have properly set in and then switch to syn.

Without making a stink after all the debate switching early will only make breakin last longer. That is not a expert talking just a observation.GC by the way is a good choice.

Why the switch to synthetic at all? The data indicates no difference in wear rates between dino and synthetic. In your climate a 5w30 dino would provide great cold starts. You would have to run 10,000+ mile OCIs to make synthetics "pay".

For low cost, watch the papers and get good API certified dino oil for under $1.00 a quart, combine the oil with a Wal*Mart SuperTech filter for $2.07. Low cost and excellent protection.

Lots of good advice here, my personal preference for a GM 5.3L Vortec would be Havoline 5W-30 or the new GF-4 Motorcraft 5W-30 with "Synthetic Blend" on the front label.

IMHO, Pennz 5W-30 tends to run on the lower end of the 5W-30's & the 5.3L engines do fine with heavier viscosity 30 wt's, such as GC.
