AAP had no 5w40 in anything. Salvo had very little and it was expensive. Maybe it was just a bad day to go get oil. Not too many stores near me for some reason. At that point I had already driven around quite a bit.

Thats the problem with the VW 2.5 that 5w40 502 spec oil isnt easy to find as far as Brand choice, and 5qt.jug price break. I am considering a 2.5 Golf for my next DD but the oil requirement alone may sway me to buy the Next Gen Ford Focus Hatch back instead......But if it were me I'd just pony up and find the proper spec 5w40 and run it, its not worth compromising anything just to save 10 dollars or so...I could be wrong but I thought Mobil 1 0w40 meets the 502 spec?

You will be fine. I have used 5w30 M1 for a 5,000 mi OCI in a 2.5 and the engine is still as good as new. GC 0w30 and Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 are VW approved and can be found at AZ and Pep Boys. I know they are "thicker" than Ultra 5w30 but you will be A-OK. If you are really worried I would order a case of Ultra 5W-40 from the Pennzoil web site, drain a 2 or 3 qt's of the 5w30 (save) and add a few qt's 5W-40 Ultra. Don't abuse it, but no reason to baby it either. Repeat. No wasted money. No loss of sleep.

Don't get me wrong, IK don't mind spending a few extra dollars for the correct oil. I just needed someone to have it yesterday.

I was shocked when the guys at AAP told me they didn't have any.

Walmart in my area usually carries Mobil 1 0W40 which in my opinion would have been a much better choice. Mobil 1 0W40 does meet VW 502. Here is the link
