Haven't seen many UOAs for GS500, nor running this oil, so figured I'd post this. Didn't come out nearly as bad as I anticipated.

The fuel dilution might have come from the short trips I had been doing with the bike - my commute was 7 miles each way and I didn't have much time for longer pleasure rides. Also, I did leave the manual petcock open once, which flooded the airbox a bit.

Subjective impressions: felt like the oil had thinned out, fast. Within a few hundred miles it became quite hard to shift into first from a stop, without messing with the clutch and revving the engine. Shifting became very notchy. Before and after I ran Rotella 15W40, and that oil did not cause shifting to behave this way.

Code:

MAKE/MODEL: Suzuki GS500E

FUEL TYPE: Gasoline (Unleaded)

ADDITIONAL INFO: 2000

OIL TYPE & GRADE: Castrol 4T 10W/40

OIL USE INTERVAL: 3,500 miles

Universal averages show typical wear levels for this type of engine after about 1,600

miles on the oil. The only metal higher than universal averages is copper. That does

show some extra wear at brass/bronze parts, but it's not high enough to show a problem.

A little fuel was present and that probably thinned the viscosity some. The good news is

that neither the fuel nor the thin viscosity did any harm, though fuel at this level can

show a fuel system issue. The TBN was 3.5 showing active additive for a longer run, but

stay at around 3,000 miles to monitor fuel dilution.

not that bad a report for that much fuel.

great air filter!

yeah copper could be a touch high or ok for this motor.
same for iron.

the lead of 4 is the puzzler. is it merely scatter or really there and if so from what?

steve

An oil with a differing DP package will juggle the trace wear metal elements around. Say, something with no overbase Mg - just Ca base.

BTW No moly on a bike oil? Wet clutch.

Isn't the viscosity pretty low at 10.6? The lab I send mine to, ALS, gave me a "caution flag" with 11.1, 11.4, and ll.6. These were mostly Amsoil and done at 3K. The 11.1 was Castrol blend.

Castrol oils seem to have unimpressive HTHS (film strength) numbers, but at least they publish them in the PDS-- have to give them credit for that.

not only does the report talk about the fuel, but so did i.

Hi,
by comparison:

Castrol 4 T 5W-40 (USA)
Vis 100C 13.0 (OZ version 13.1)
Vis 40C 70.2 (OZ version 77.2)
HTHS Vis 2.9 (OZ version 3.7)

Castrol 4 T 10W-40 (USA)
Vis 100C 13.3 (OZ version 13.5)
Vis 40C 71.3 (OZ version 92.0)
HTHS Vis 2.9 (OZ version 3.7)

All SJ/MA2 and with Castrol's "magic TriZone technology - marketing........?

The variance in HTHS Vis is a worry!!

That's because what castrol in the US is reporting is the minimum HTHS required by the API 10w-40 grade which happens to be 2.9 cP. They don't report the actual HTHS. We've been complaining about this for years. Castrol's specs in the US leave a lot to be desired.

They even list the good ole GC (0w-30) as having HTHS of 2.9, even though we know that in reality it must have HTHS of at least 3.5 cP since it carries VW 502.00, BMW LL-01, and MB 229.5 certs.
