I cut this primarily to see how well the bypass sealed on the synthetic end caps. Turns out not so well as I saw light all around the leaf spring to end cap seal.

You might be seeing the light simply "lighting up" the felt end cap material. Was there a good impression in the end cap from the leaf spring?

Let's see a shot of the leaf spring ruffles if it has some.

That is certainly a possibility however the light I saw bleeding through was bright white, it didn't seem muffled by material. My eyes don't work very well anymore so it makes it difficult to diagnose it properly. The end cap isn't lined up perfectly on the nylon center tube so the leaf spring impression is inconsistent but there is one. If this filter does leak, I would think it would be fairly minimal. Here are the extra pictures you requested.

I had hope because of the polyester caps and wide cage end, it could pass the light test. Based on the pics and accompanying commentary, it seems not. The bypass piece seal area doesn't look great.

Thanks for c&p with light test.

Wouldn't the end caps swell up a bit with oil?
I would think so, they would have to absorb a bit at least. I have another one on the shelf that I'll spin on next oil change. When it's done with it's service I'll cut it open, might be a while though. I'm slow with the miles.

Looks like a well stamped leaf spring. Can you realistically ask for more from this design - a three-dollar commodity item?

If you are constantly filtering 95% of the volume passed through the filter - there will be clean oil in the sump - until you lunch the motor or start going nutty doing slaloms and severe hill climbs and descents which might stir up some mud.

Otherwise, time to buy a vehicle with a cartridge loader filter canister

Happy New Year from the wild-weathered Northeast!

How you coming along with putting miles on that Supertech? It's been 5 months.......
Unfortunately quite slowly. I put the filter on my 2020 Ford Fusion with the 2.0 Ecoboost. Somehow Ford managed to make a 4 cylinder with the fuel mileage of a V8 yet less power than a V6. With gas still around $5 per gallon in my area I've been leaving it parked in favor of my old Hyundai Elantra. I'd say I've probably put 5 or 6 hundred miles on it since the oil change. All that I can report at this time is that the filter hasn't sprung an external leak. I have some vacation time coming up soon. Hopefully the wife and I can take it on a good long trip to get the miles up a bit so that I can pull it and do a C&P on it relatively soon.
