I am doing the first oil change this morning in my wifes '05 Ford Explorer. It has the 4.0L SOHC, that Ford specifies 5W-30, GF-4 and some new Ford spec.

I have GF-4 Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30's (meets new Ford spec), as well as "older" Mobil 1 in 5W-30 and 10W-30. I also have EP Mobil 1 in 5W and 10W-30.

Should I just use either the GF-4 Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum straight up, or some combination of the oils? Add Synpower additive,or?

I want to stay in warranty, but also want maximize protection as well.

I live in Southern California so this oil will probably see 90 degree temps before it is replaced.

Thanks in advance

run what meets the correct specified ford spec.

platinum might be a good choice.

Pennzoil rep on this board stated Pennzoil Platinum sysnthetic was good stuff.

I got a great deal on it through $15 rebate on 6 qts. so I gave it a try. I am loaded on Mobil 1 (GF3, GF4, EP_ through Pep Boys buy 3 get 3 free, so I am all set.

Was wondering more about peoples thoughts on GF4 oils and also new Ford spec for 5W-30 oil as opposed to GF3 Mobil 1 as well as Mobil 1 EP.
