I stand corrected.

I know the gas shows high Manganese and I thought it was high sulphur content also. I didn't realize it was a common oil additive.

I learned something. Can't sulphur degrade some composites used in engines?? I though high sulphur content gasolines were a bad thing?

It adds to the formation of acid rain. That's why you hear about the need for low sulphur coal and fuel oils. The polution from the Ohio valley causes most of your north east to basically be "dead". Even in Maine (love that state) ..you rarely find any indiginous fish life. They use a hatchery just like the rest of us.

Canadian gas also contains a lot of sulfur in it still, but it's supposed to be phased out over the next few years.

I think it is also high in some parts of the U.S. (Southeast esp.) I have read about problems with one series of BMW engines with some material, because of it.

I didn't realize it was a major oil additive, because the lab I use doesn't list it.

It would be great if somebody knows what is maximum allowed content of sulphur and lead in Canadian and US gas.

According to our local standards:
- sulphur: 0.05 %
- lead: 0.013 and 0.010 g/dm3

As for BMW, apparently the problem was quite serious if for N.A. engine heads are made of allows different from those for Europe.

Here we may ask gas station to show the certificate for its gas (to be issued for each batch) and usually the real content of sulphur and lead is considerably less (relatively 0.02-0.03 % and 0.005-0.007 g/dm3, but it does not mean you will be lucky with gas quality. Everything like in casino.

I have noted that the oil am I using now contains a lot more sulfur than the one used previously.2000 ppm and now 3000 ppm.

It is an additive or a bad thing?

Did you do a VOA?

In a used oil analysis I would bet the Sulfur is from the Canadian Fuel. Just like the Manganese is from the MMT used in Canadian Fuel.

A quick check of your last two used oil analysis

New Motor Oil
6901 km
3169 ppm
571 ppm per 1000 km

Old Motor Oil
3942 km
1942 ppm
613 ppm per 1000 km

BMW engine blocks, not heads, are iron in NA because the NikaSil aluminum blocks do not like sulfur-containing fuel.
