Sudoku: enlighten me

Good evening folks

I'm slowly getting good at Sudoku and Wordoku. Can anyone tell me why or who developed this great mind game. It is a good exercise as my mom loves it as does my disabled military veteran friend likes it

It was invented in the USA in 1979 by a 74 year old retried architect.
