Most of the markings are worn off this one but it seems to have done OK. Looks like it picked up some silicone sealant. Decided to prop this next to the mighty OC47 for comparison. This is a TINY filter.

It looks like there is a lot more media and it is more evenly spaced than the usual OCOD. I sure wouldn't be running to the Subaru dealer to buy this filter.

+1 is all I can say.

Looks like it is a cheapened Tough Guard. Weak.

The bypass valve looks like it is not fully closed.

Looks like it caught a couple big chunks of something ... looks like grey silicone used for liquid gasket when engines are assembled.

I don't know when this filter was pulled (have stashed the old filters for the past while) but it's from a 2002 Forester. Standard 'small' Subaru filter but I'm now using the H6 'large' one.

I see little difference from the orange can. When I did the "Favorite Oil Filter" thread, the Subura OEM's were used a fair bit, but they were lumped into the "Other OEM" category initially. By the time I realized they were going to be a significant category it was too late to rectify.

I'd guess 7+ filters in the "Other OEM" category were Subura OEM. If I do one next year I'll make them separate.

I've cut many of these filters open. They've all been in great shape. Here's one I posted years ago with over 4,000 miles https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1843143&page=1

The Honeywell 15208AA12A is identical to the FRAM ExtraGuard PH9715. The only difference is that the OEM has a p-cut rounded gasket and the FRAM is a flat lathe cut (at least it used to.. I've heard they all have rounded gaskets now). Specs, media, can, etc.. all the same. That's why the PH9715 is only specced for Subaru (and a couple Saabs) unlike their other FRAM filters which are rated for a multitude of applications. You can't even buy a ToughGuard or Ultra version of this filter. Doesn't exist.

Also, the reason this filter is short is to prevent oil from overheating in the can. If you look at the Subaru engines this filter is specced for you'll see the exhaust goes around it. On the turbocharged Subarus this is even more prevalent. You can put a longer filter on these cars, but at the risk of frying the oil, along with the media, in the cans.

I've used nothing but the 15208AA12A on my 2008 Forester. Subarus can be tough on filters, but this has done great on mine for years. If you want to save a few bucks you could buy the PH9715.

I did notice that I do appreciate it. I have no fear using this specific filter but I have no want to use it either.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the pics.

That's what it is. I think it came from the job the dealer did (timing belt, tensioner, oil-pump seal).

Ahhh, good tymes.

Reminds me of my inlaws Pontiac Transport. Faulty gaskets leads to cooling-in-oil leads to $4000 repair bill.

how many miles were on this filter? subaru for a very long time insisted on 3750 mile oil changes. no doubt because of the very fast flow of the oil travel. they only just recently uped that to 7500 depending on the engine.

I haven't been keeping track of the old filters, but usually 10k km.

Dang ... that's 750 more miles than Purolator recommends.

For reference this is the FRAM PH9715 compared to the Subaru Honeywell 15208AA12A. Excuse the dog hair on the second photo. My dog is a shedding machine! haha

The only difference I've ever found between the two are the gasket types, the color of the plastic for the pressure relief valves, and the FRAM baseplate seems to have pressed dimples to seat the gasket while the OEM is smooth all the way around. Other than that they're the same.

Interesting pics Soob, thanks for posting. That must be a very application specific filter, as that orange can looks to have quite a bit more pleats than most and internally is awful similar to the OEM. Maybe that is due to it being so short.
