I’ve found one with 90k miles and a manual transmission. How does this particular vehicle rank on the spectrum of Subaru reliability?

It's just a lifted Impreza hatchback, so the reliability is the same as any manual Impreza.

It has the FB engine, so it has a timing chain and no widespread head gasket issues like the EJ.

The manual transmission is combined with the front diff, so it requires Motul Gear 300.

Some FB 2.0 engines used a lot of oil, think it was bad rings. One in my family has 90,000+ and never used any oil out of the ordinary.
It is starting to leak from the timing chain cover. Looks like a silicon bead is the only seal.

Those FB20 and FB25 engines were known major oil consumers, but like the poster above me said, some were really bad, some were ok.

A few years back, I was on a road trip, and an old lady was in a quick mart at the gas station, and she was totally lost looking for oil. She had just bought a used Forester with the FB25 and she said her oil light was on. I showed her which oil to get and had her get 2 quarts to put in the engine. And I made her do it so she knew how because I told her unfortunately she would probably have to do that from time to time.

We sold our '14 MT Crosstrek with 165k last summer. It was a solid performer and no issues with oil burning.

Replaced the clutch at 130k due to a bad throwout bearing although it still had clutch life left. Also replaced about 5-6 pairs of wheel bearings during our ownership. Other than that it was a good albeit gutless little car.
