FYI Everyone, My MIL has a 2018 Subie Legacy. Transmission started bucking, and shuttering. Vehicle has 24k on the clock. Made appt and took into local dealer. They immediately put her in a loaner and said they may have the car as long as 2 months. Apparently there is campaign on these for replacement. I am assuming that the dealer will be doing "whole unit swap" and will contact her when it is complete.

I found a campaign number for this on the interweb. It is 16-117-18. Get this as well. This must be a wide spread problem as Subie has set up a seperate hotline to call - 844-373-6622.

Oh, have I mentioned how much I do not like CVTs?

Yeah, I don't mind how the CVT actually works in our car, but I don't know if its going to be a 300k mile trans... So far they about the same price as the RAV4 non-hybrid transmission at the wreckers so they must be average reliability.
I do like subaru for extending the warranty on them though, they stand behind what they make at least.

Something GM & CryCo still haven’t done for the DOD/AFM lifters… and those affect millions

I’d certainly be upset especially having a 2 month wait. But consider your MIL lucky, having worked at a dealer in the past, I can assure you that there are no shortage of automatic transmission failures before the 3/36 or 5/60 powertrain warranties are up. Very rarely are warranty extensions offered. Being factory covered in a 7 year old vehicle is fantastic.

The CVT in the 19 Impreza failed last year. Fluid was never changed and should have been although that is no guarantee. The current CVTs are improved and pretty good IMO. The SPT in the WRX is good for a CVT.

Interesting, Subaru didn't even give themselves an out domestically as they say to never service the CVT (except for the "severe service" part which sounds like just about every person who drives)

I'd like to see this encompass the SJ Forester

Yes, that is an odd decision for Subaru USA... Subaru Canada still requires the driveline fluids to be done every 5 years or 60k miles as the minimum and more frequently for severe service.

Owners were sent letters. In some cases the warranty was extended to 100K.

Say what you want but I think all 3 of the Subaru vehicles had a CVT and zero problems.

In fact no problems with the Subaru in general. Other than mice crewing A/C wiring and some kind of wood rat chewing WW tank and hoses.
CTV should last if its driven like an old granny car. Never 4 wheelin and such, and no pulling trailers of any sort.
Its a transmission that is constantly slipping. The belt or chain has to enter and exit very tightly compressed tapered pulleys.

I had a 2018 Forester bought brand new. (gave to Granddaughter)
Got the letter extending the CVT warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles I believe.

I had the drain and refill done every 30,000 miles. Over 90,000 miles on it now with no hiccups.
An old man and a 18 year old girl never abused it either. Hopefully many more miles left in the CVT.

AFAIK, the Subaru CVT issue was the solenoids on the valve body giving out. The Ascent/OXT had an assembly issue with a chain guide not being mounted properly.

I’d trust a Subaru or Honda CVT more than a Nissan one.
