Stopping chain Texts

I do not text much, nor often. I pay for 200 messages a month and each one after that costs a dime. Rarely do I exceed the limit.

Freaking racket.

So my friend texts me a 'Happy New Year' from his iphone and soon I am getting replies to his text from people all over the country many of whom, I have no idea who they are. Must have gotten 20 texts from people I know and another 40 texts from unrecognizable numbers. Unless I open or erase them, my 4 year old dumbphone phone will keep indicating a new message.

Makes me so angry that I want to smash the dang thing with a sledgehammer, and perhaps miss on the first few swings as getting it on the first swing would not assuage my anger, nor be as satisfying.

Apparently( not yet sure) when I send a "do not send me chain texts" response, it also goes out to everybody who was included in the original text message. So it appears nearly a huge percentage of all my allotted monthly text messages were used in 2 useless messages. One saying happy new year and one saying 'don't include me in chain texts', which I had thought went only to the original sender, not every single person who he sent the message to.

So now a bunch of people who have me saved in their phones think I am some angry anti text message curmudgeon. Perhaps I am

I already give too much money to the dang phone company.


Any solutions short of the sledge hammer?

Basically what happened was your friend sent out a group message (very popular among iPhone/iOS users) and you got caught up in it. Happens to me all the time on my Galaxy S III since I don't have Apple's group messaging. DRIVES ME FREAKING NUTS. Best thing to do is let it pass, not much you can do to get yourself out of it outside of blocking all of the numbers, which takes way to long.

Casually mention it to the friends that do it.

Frankly I find it very impersonal when I get a spammy mass-text wishing me Merry Christmas or Happy New Year. At least take the extra few seconds to use my name and maybe personalize it a bit. I tend to ignore the generic ones.

you should be able to block texts from anyone not in your contacts.

i pay $38.00 a month for unlimited calls and text but i dont text that much either

I text an awful lot, I use voice software so I do not need to type it; about 400 per month, so I bought unlimited text.

Texting is the #1 most marked up consumer product out there. So I can appreciate why you're annoyed. Some are blaming it upon the apple capability to text multiple numbers at once, but it sounds to me like your dumb phone has that capability too, if your message went out to everyone.

I refuse to text for regular communication, though sometimes folks do text me. It's seldom enough that I've never bought a texting plan. Apple iMessage has been useful, and I use that, as it sends text as data for free (as it should be, I pay att for a data plan and then they dare to charge me huge money for texts that have minimal network use??!? A long voice conversation surely uses more resources than a text), but it will allow texting to others without iMessage capability (on devices with phone capability.

I would have written a separate text, or else called. The originator and asked them specifically not to group text. Not that they would necessarily remember next time. I'd probably call your provider and try to prevent so me stuff like that. They and/or your phone might have some filtering capability to prevent such things.

Send a new text, not a reply.

Thanks. I'll be sure to make a new message and not just reply to such texts. but as it turns out, I have not gotten a single text since my angry 'reply to all' not to include me in chain texts.

Another issue on my phone with messages sent from I phones, is that even short messages need to be opened and this takes a few seconds, just to reveal the message I already read.

Time for a new phone really as it has been giving me issues for months now with charging properly, and now yahoo is telling me my phone will likely not be supported anymore on the 8th.

I've just been trying to avoid becoming just another smart phone Zombie.
