I recently bought a 2012 1.8L Chevy Sonic. The upper coolant hose has a sticky black coating I cannot clean off and stains my hands when I touch it. What is it? How to clean it? Should I replace it? Can someone identify the part and post a link?
That is oil that has softened the rubber, or partially dissolved it. The oil might be splashing up from somewhere or possibly the air conditioning condenser.
Either way, find the source of the leak, fix it, then replace the hose.
Oil or solvents could make it sticky. Or it could just be failing - bad rubber. If its easy to replace I likely would. Or try soap and water and if it goes away after a bit might be OK.
