Stealing Cable or Wireless Internet

The biggest piracy is mass produced. There's also thievery by the legit outfits. Take my cable company before comcast bought it. They would switch boxes every 3 years like clockwork. This was to keep the rental fee ball in their court. You were allowed to buy your own box if the company charged a fee for it ..and boxes were available for purchase. So ..just switch scrambling formats every 3 years and make buying more expensive. Cable companies lease their boxes from massive service outfits that lease/service all popular boxes (or did at one time - dated knowledge).

I'd say that I would draw the line on intellectual property when I'm making money that would otherwise go to the vendor/producer. I have no guilt involved with burning purchased music to a CD for use by me anywhere I please. Mass batching them and putting convincing labels on them and selling them at a fleamarket? Nope.

Yes. I'm still one of the un-Ipod (or like device) crowd. I don't listen to non-broadcast music that much while driving ..and have plenty to listen to from my collection.

I don't even have satellite radio

..and never intend to get it. No premium cable channels ..and I hate paying what I do for what I get.

Gary,

I used to be just like you, then I got Sirius Satelite Radio and my driving experienced has changed forever. I paid the Lifetime membership fee so I don't have a monthly bill and I enjoy commercial free, quality music that I want to hear and not what the stations seem to want to play because it's popular or cheap on the royalties.

Try it, I'm sure you will like it and become addicted.

I don't own an I-POD nor do I have any premium channels other than HBO (Series I like on this channel). I watch maybe 3-4 hours of TV a week if that.

Steve

I don't even care how good a deal anything is anymore. I just don't want "more". I want less ..less bills ..less obligation ..less in lots of stuff.

I'm an Obbop cult follower.

Had my E30 for 2 years next month, and it doesn't even have a radio, let alone tape or CD.

I missed it for a good couple days, then didn't even consider it. Boss asked if I wanted a radio/CD for Christmas, and I wouldn't waste the money for something that (I've found) interests me so little.

I work w/ a guy who listens to sat radio or his ipod on the drive in. I grin when he gets stuck in traffic that I avoided because I heard the alert on the radio.
I also am anti-ipod. music quality sucks, no dynamic range. I'll stick to CDs myself.

Not yet, but soon, very soon.

(Using 1/2 my vacation this summer lest Oracle not let me carry as much as Sun does...)

I have this thought quite frequently. I'm always asking why the family is bringing me another idea to spend.

I'm going to start to ask for ideas to save that amount when an idea to spend is brought to the table.

Braces, teen drivers, summer camp, etc. When will they start bringing money saving ideas.

I have an idea, the teens can get jobs...

That's one reason the nearly 17 year old boy is not yet driving, he has no way to pay for the car insurance.

I hear you and I'm of the same mind set that is why I paid for the lifetime subscription. I would go nuts not having the Satellite radio in the car with as much time as I spend on the road!

That 17 year old will never fit in with rest of the "I-pod Generation" unless you start spoiling him. You don't want him to feel left out do you?

My parents did the same thing with me. I had to pay for my own college, the insurance/maintenance on my first car (yes that ugly Mini-Van posted in other threads) etc. Then when I graduated they handed me a cheque for what they would have given me to help me and told me I could either spend it or I could start a financial plan towards my future. By then I had learned the value of a dollar and chose to invest it, which they knew I would. I would have never learned any other way, looking back on it now. But at the time I was PO'ed because I had to work when my friends were out enjoying life. Fast forward 10 years later and I have quite the financial plan, a good head on my shoulders and a sound plan I think for my future in terms of how to get where I want to go. Most of my friends don't have a pot to pee in, are swimming in debt and I'm enjoying life while they are working... How the tables turn!

Be very careful about securing your Wireless Internet. Many a innocent family has had the local or State Police show up looking for the owner of the Internet connection. You want to cause lots of trouble and don't want it coming back on you you use someones unsecured network.

Many of the Child Porn sickos drive around looking for these unprotected wireless sites to down load child porn. Ask anyone who has had a visit from the Secret Service over a death threat made from their Internet connection. This stuff happens a lot and many people have no idea how much garbage can come down on them from someone taping into their Internet connection.

I had a black box for years on my cable for the premium channels. I hated my cable company because they were the only game in town as they say. Their customer service was a joke to say something nice about them. Well they moved all their premium channels up to digital to get rid of the piracy.
I went down to their office and dropped off their cable box and went to a Dish. I never looked back. I was tired of my cable going out for anywhere between six hours and two days at least once a month. The cable companies attitude was basically tough S*** what are you going to do about it. Go To A Dish

Another big +1.

Sometimes less can be more.

"..less bills ..less obligation ..less in lots of stuff" means less stress, fewer problems, more happiness.

+2!!! Feels great to simplify life doesn't it???

Amen to that. It's not that I don't admire complexity and ingenuity ..gosh no. But every advantage has its toll to be paid in liability. When you complicate your life out of choice, taking all the ancillary and extended liabilities into account, fine. Increasing the efficiency of your "going nowhere fast squirrel cage" to maintain some standard of complexity, well that just doesn't add up for me.

It is as secure as it can be, and the neighbours are on a separate network and everything is logged so if they visit something they shouldn't it's tracked. They are aware of it as well.

The neighbours are good people anyways and I would trust them with my life so I would be shocked if they were doing illegal things.

yeah, that's like a daily occurrence, visits from the secret service. it's in the paper all them time.

I don't think that it's publicized at all. When I worked in human services, one teenager is on permanent tracking due to some acting out in writing to a former president. It took them a bit to get around to him ..but get around to him they did. I'd say that it's rare, but occurs.
