The biggest piracy is mass produced. There's also thievery by the legit outfits. Take my cable company before comcast bought it. They would switch boxes every 3 years like clockwork. This was to keep the rental fee ball in their court. You were allowed to buy your own box if the company charged a fee for it ..and boxes were available for purchase. So ..just switch scrambling formats every 3 years and make buying more expensive. Cable companies lease their boxes from massive service outfits that lease/service all popular boxes (or did at one time - dated knowledge).
I'd say that I would draw the line on intellectual property when I'm making money that would otherwise go to the vendor/producer. I have no guilt involved with burning purchased music to a CD for use by me anywhere I please. Mass batching them and putting convincing labels on them and selling them at a fleamarket? Nope.
