Planning a trip there this summer, usually I stay on Peterson or the Academy but both are maxxed out for lodging.

Am I better off staying in the North at a hotel up near the Academy or farther south near Peterson and the airport? Last time I was there a couple of years ago we were moved off Peterson and into the Radisson right near the airport (right next to some restaurant with a big plane out front lol. It was a convenient location and pretty nice but more than I want to spend this time around.

Maybe just need some advice about where is a good place to stay......looking at the Ramada but heard the area wasn't the greatest....2 LaQuinta's in town, also thinking maybe the Hampton Inn or a Hilton Garden which has a decent military rate.

Just throwing it out there to see what the locals would recommend as Colorado Springs is sprawling and can take a bit of time to get from 1 end to another! I am more familiar with the area around the AFB (Powers Rd?)

Thanks

Its been so long since I've lived there I would not recognize the town. However, I always try to stay at a Hampton Inn as I find they are all pretty nice and well run. Most have a very good continental breakfast.

The north end of town is generally the nicer end of town. I can't really recommend a specific hotel since, well, I live here and have never needed a hotel room!

Embassy Suites is quite popular; it's near the south entrance to the Air Force Academy. It might be too expensive though. Would be on par with The Hampton Inn. They have a really nice restaurant called the Polo Club, and they have a cook to order complimentary breakfast. There's tons of good restaurants around that area as well and it's right next to the interstate.

Check out he Best Westerns in Colorado Springs, they have a great summer promotion going on right now. I work at the front desk of a Best Western, they just became Best Western, then a BW Plus, which is a 3 diamond and then BW Premiere.

Thanks for the replies, I'm thinking the Hampton Inn near the Academy if I stay up in that part of town. Always liked Hampton Inns and it seems to be in a decent part of town. I think that looking at the map it is near the Embassy Suites?

Yea, the Embassy Suites is south of the Hampton on I-25 by about a mile. If you need any other info/recommendations for restaurants or things to do, I'd be glad to help.

Drew, is there still a tavern downtown called the Emporium and a family owned restaurant that serves Mexican food called the Mission Bell in Manitou Springs?

Drew- what about a German restaurant called Edelweiss I believe...is that still there?

Oh always on the lookout for great Mexican as well so any suggestions appreciated

We ate at one last time I was there ...had the word Family in it I think....that must narrow it down to about 50 places lol

Edelweiss is still here, but I can recommend a better German restaurant: Uwes. Edelweiss has decent food and of course a great atmosphere, but Uwes has better food, it's cheaper, and it's a hole in the wall. It's generally rated as having better food than The Edelweiss.

There are so many new Mexican restaurants here that it's hard to recommend one! My favorite is still Senior Manuels, but I sent someone there as a recommendation, and they hated it! Jose Muldoon's downtown is a good bet though.

Pueblo Viejo is another good all around Mexican restaurant.

Where in town was the family one you ate at? Was it 3 Margaritas?

I want to say we ate at the Pueblo one...that name sounds awful familiar.

Ok I'll look up Uwes...I think we tried to eat there but they were closed for whatever reason

Wow memory coming back now that you mention those other places...I remember seeing them when driving around during the day there!

I'd love to take a ride down to Durango and Cortez again as Mesa Verde was phenomenal but man is that a long drive from the Springs lol...I think I could drive from my house in NH and be in DC in the amount of time it took to get to Cortez!

So much to do and see in that area and not enough time....oh well leaves more for the next time!

When I lived in Denver, I liked Colorado Springs, but the main thing I remember -- and you probably know this: When driving past the Academy entrance to I-25, watch out for low-flying cars! Those pilots-to-be, I suspect, come hurtling onto the Interstate in their sports cars without looking for traffic. They can't get used to the idea that on the ground, 85-90 mph is fast.

Oh, and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is spectacular.

Sounds as if you have a military ID card, then check lodging at Fort Carson. Look it up on the web. Also check the per diem rates and take advantage of the government rate. If you can possibly get a tour to NORAD, TAKE IT!!!! Also, there is a casino somewhere west of there on top of the mountain, pretty cool to go to, even if you don't gamble. Nice, pretty ride. Also, the is some park called painted desert rocks, or painted rocks, or something like that, that's pretty cool too.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is great! Visited it last time, may do so again! Did not make it to Cripple Creek before, will make a point to do this time for sure. I'm going to be renting a Harley at some point while I'm there so any excuse for a ride is a good one
