I have a 1998 Honda Civic that makes this wheezing/hissing noise on cold starts. Almost sounds like the pulleys need oiling but I don't think it's coming from the pulleys. After about 5 minutes of driving the sound goes away. I don't notice any driveability issues with the car. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a dry bearing, possibly in the alternator or air pump. If you have a really long screwdriver, put the tip on each one and put your ear to the handle and try to isolate the noise.

It's a 5-speed manual transmission. Also, I just put in a bottle of Auto-Rx for my regular oil change. The noise was still apparent before the oil change.

My asking about the trans was just an obscure thing that I notice in my wife's TJ during cold starts. Same sorta squeaking sound (sorta like a belt squeal ..but not quite).

Simple way to check if it's the accessories ..remove the belt before a cold start. If it's still there ..back to the drawing board.
