Might depend on how long you want to run it (long time is typical in a rear end) ... M1 140 is PAO ... and ST is ?

Put ST in wife's Subaru rear diff. Seems to be doing OK. Under 6 bucks a Qt.

Rear gears in normal passengers cars don't need anything "super-duper" synthetic as this app doesn't have combustion byproducts. contaminating the fluid. Traditionally low flash point Napthenic oils have been used, The EP additives are the special sauce.

That said, My Nissan dealer put Mobil HD80W90 in my 14 rogue TC and rear diff and it was terrible in the winter. OE fluids were mostly transparent ( as to their viscosity) on sub zero days where the new mobil fill was causing all kinds of problems in the DT. I cant beleive Nissan used 80w90 the rear diff of a 4 banger CUV.

Never a Mobil fan for pink syn grease OR diff fluid through the years.

Sorry, I just dislike Mobil gear oils. And PAO isnt a gear oil "savior" This is not motor oil.
Plus you said its PAO - which it IS NOT in the majority per the SDS I found.

Also I left Indiana in the 50's, lived in Jersey for a couple years then move to the Boston area

It just looks thicker.

He must be weighting the VI high in the eval.

At least when "fresh" the ST will show sig better cold flow due to the moderately higher VI shpwing even though its KV40 is slightly higher than the Mobil product. That said the Mobil could possibly maintain its KV100 value longer in service than the ST ... depending ....
