I recently switched from Penn. Platinum 5w30 to SuperTech Synthetic 5w30. I have about 3k miles on this OCI. At about 2300 miles, I was down a qt. and topped off with 1 qt. of Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. The van has a very noticible lifter tick since switching to ST. I will be switching back to PP.

I am not familiar with the MSDS for each, but it sounds like SuperTech is a thinner weight. PP isn't that much more expensive, and it sounds like it solves your tick issue. I'd stick with that.

I've considered that the tick could still be there after the switch. I will probably do a change this weekend. If the tick goes away, I would say that that is a good sign it was the oil.

When? Cold start? Hot idle? Full time?

You can have #1 or #2 ..but usually not both ..unless you also have #3 ..which kinda throws out the oil all together.

So far, it has seemed to be on cold starts. However, my wife drives the van primarily. I will check it out in further detail tomorrow.

I just started the van this morning. The lifter tick was there upon start up and very noticible. It went away after warming up.
So what does lifter tick on cold start up indicate? I am almost 3k miles into this OCI using SuperTech full synthetic. I usually do 5K OCI's. Do I dump the ST and go back to PP?

I'd like to know the answer to this as well having had the same problem when I tried GC.

Also consider an improperly valved oil filter, or if you have the correct one, it could be internally faulty - plain old bad luck.
A bad anti drain valve can cause a start up knock or tick.
Unless you leave the old filter in there, you won't know if it's the oil or filter that caused the problem.
Engines are normally not that picky about minor differences in oil.
