Southern Air 747 emegency over Qatar

Not sure what's up with this,but this 747 has declared an emergency and is currently flying in circles over Qatar.

Appears they may have landed at the Al-Udeid Air Base, which is the gray area on the map just to the north of where they had been circling.

I haven't been able to find any updates, but it disappeared near that gray area on the map, which zooming in closer shows it is the Al-Udeid Air Base. Apparently US and British forces are stationed there.

Yes. Originally a French base, it's home of AFCENT now.

I spent time at Al-Udeid AB back in 2003 when it was a tent city. It has a wide long run way and is on the middle of nowhere.

You and me both, then! The tents were good, but the "Cadillac" showers 200 yards away were lousy and the USAF imposed "beer card" was just silly....which led to my joining the RAF's "Muff Inn"....

Not sure what's up but flying circles is normal - they're more than likely dumping fuel to meet their max landing weight.
