This is the soot that comes out of a spinner filter running 7500 miles in a Mercedes 240D.The oil was Petro Canada Duron. I don't know why the picture looks so small. I am going to pull the metal out of the soot and compare it to a 7500 mile run with Schaeffers 7000 oil

The soot in the oil was still at about 4%
The soot that came out of the filter was just a little over an ounce. I check for metal by thinning out the soot with lacquer thinner and then pulling the metal out with a magnet.

Jim, Most of that residue is fuel soot, metals may not be from engine wear.

I forgot to mention that in the earlier discusssion.

4% is not abnormal in older design diesel like yours.

Try a really high quality fuel treat and make sure the injectors and pump are in good repair.

Suggestions on fuel treat would be using Fuel Power. 1 oz to 5 gallons.

Alot of guys here are using it now and having great results and its cheap.

Run a few tanks of FP and you'll be amazed at the drop in fuel soot.

If you analyze this engine oil I could tell you exactly the levels and where they are from.

One thing that I have noticed when using FP in a diesel engine, when I accelerate heavy I do not get the black smoke that I did without FP. And this is on my chipped diesel. The disadvantage is that I can't fill the low rider boom box jerks at a stop light with smoke anymore.

I've pulled a lot of spin filters and that is typical. Maybe why I like them.
As far as using the additive is concerned, I will second the comment. Don't know the specific product mentioned, but I import "Diesel Plus" from the US and it eliminates smoke, adds 10 to 15% mileage and I typically get about 0.5% soot. this is the analisis on my 99 turbo diesel 4Runner

Here is the iron on the end of a small magnet.
I will be looking at the iron again in a few months to see what happens with the moly oil. I only want to change one thing at a time so that I can see what effect things have. I am now using power service additive and will continue using it for the next 7500 miles so that the conditions are the same.
