I'm considering purchasing Soliloquy tower speakers! They are ported speakers and there is a slight tear in the outer rubber edge on one of the woofers. Thoughts on sound effect? Long term?

Speakers are around twenty-two years old. Obsolete and can't be replaced. Selling for $1,100.00, retailed for $6,500. Beautiful speakers/cabinets, Seller assured me some glue will fix it and doesn't effect sound. I live in the desert, so no dry rot...Otherwise; speakers appear in excellent condition.

The speakers sound great, but I'm not an audiophile.

Opinions are greatly appreciated.

They are 20 yrs old. All the foam will be drying out and become more brittle. Plus you are in the desert.

There is no way I'd pay that much for those, regardless of how good they sound. As mentioned above, the crossovers are likely to be out of spec, and the surrounds are failing.

Yes, you can repair that with glue and if done with flexible glue, it won't affect the sound. But it is very likely that the surrounds will need to be replaced sooner or later.

I can't guess as to what they are worth, but quality comparable speakers today such as Polk Es55's retail for $350 each.

Nope...just nope on this one. I would pass at anything over $300.

There is not only the cut you point out, but another pin hole a few degrees CCW from the cut. They will effect sound, and you will most likely hear the cut at lower frequencies where the pressure inside the cabinet comes into play, especially if they are ported.

There are simple repairs, and some will work for a while, but the posts earlier about having them rebuilt with new surrounds is the best option. As already mentioned the crossovers are aged out, and most likely in need of rebuild as well.

If your budget is $1100 there are MUCH better deals to be had.

I would post this in a couple of big audiophile forums for good feedback...I am but a novice in this area, even though it has been a major hobby for most of my life.

Used rubber glue for tear in same area ( foam ) of the woofer for Sound Dynamics 300 TI . That was over 20 years ago and still holding . Sound fine . Good luck .
