Dragging my ancient decrepit digits across the board of keys... between sobs and shudders of self-loathing and fear, I, the Mighty Obbop, reaches out to fellow old coots, geezers, ancient carcasses struggling to draw in another breath and maintain life for a few more minutes.....

I, the Mighty Obbop, beseeches thee to enlighten the unenlightened. Now that I, the Mighty Obbop has crossed the time barrier known as a half-century old, should I join the AARP...the American Association of Retired Persons?

Are the self-proclaimed wondrous benefits the organization self-boasts about truly helpful to ancient coots such as I?

Anything I should know, pro or con?

I do not travel much and my pension fled overseas along with the firm and retirement will likely be living in the back of my pick-up under the topper / camper shell while parked in a remote rural place where I can squat... growing and trapping what food I can with infrequent visits to the nearby itty bitty town.

Would the AARP be of any benefit to one of America's old working poor?

You are calling yourself old at 50 years? I have you beat by quite a few years. I personally don't like the AARP but I will avoid politics here.
 
You are still a young guy. Me, I am not relevant anymore. I am so old that the young people here at this web site don't even know what I am talking about. Some of my grandparents were born in New York City in, ready?, 1875 and 1877. My parents were born in 1911. I am ancient, my thoughts are old school, and the young people wonder how much longer I will be around. Some of the people at this web site probably think I have experience greasing wheel hubs of covered wagons. You are still a young guy. You should go find a second career.
 
Hmmm. At 50 I was still pulling 9-10 hour days sometimes 6 days a week. Maybe that's why my body is so f..ed up.. I would be happy if I now had my 50yr old body.

Mama Bear & I were 58 when we opened our store, went from a 5 day/wk job to a 6 day/wk ... keeps us young.

I'm an 13 year AARP member because my sister gives it top me for my birthday. Any discount available to AARP is also available to others, like retired military, Good Sam members to mention a few, also left handed and right handed people get the same discounts. I've gotten insurance quotes from them and I am still with my original insurer.
