I'm trying to stay ahead of this because I tried this before (including linking the actual documentary, which apparently is now deleted by whoever uploaded it to YouTube). But there was a little bit of salty language in the documentary. So I get it - don't post stuff that might have inappropriate language.
But yeah - apparently Werner Herzog had a bet with documentary filmmaker Errol Morris that he would eat his shoe if Morris ever managed to finish his documentary Gates of Heaven, about the pet funeral/burial business. The film was completed and Herzog lost the bet. His shoe was prepared by Berkeley restaurateur Alice Waters, and the consumption was done in front of a live audience at the UC Theatre in Berkeley where the movie had its premiere.
And documentary filmmaker Les Blank made a documentary about it, which the Criterion Collection has in its library.
I'm thinking more people today know of Herzog as an actor, especially his role in The Mandalorian. And there's even an action figure.
