It's not running as well as it can right now because I got the wrong octane in the gas tank.

Very platform specific. Diablosport makes some of the most versatile tuners out there, but each mfgr has different software and control strategies so the adjustable parameters can vary wildly from platform to platform...


I agree. The Diablo products are the best "canned tunes" available. Hypertech is the worst.

They can get rid of AFM, all of the abuse nannies, reduce torque management, change shift point and firmness, change the tow haul mode and do a tune the engine and transmission specifically to what you want out of your truck. They only do GM.

I did the mildest traditional tune on my 2003 GMC Sierra from Blackbear and it changed it to a different machine. Totally woke it up by releasing all the GM dialed out horsepower and torque to be usable in everyday life and in towing. The first time I romped on the accelerator, I knew it was different. It takes off the line with all the power it was meant to and shifts with a bark in the shift to 2nd. Driving around town it is mild yet responsive with quicker shifts. I will restate that this was the mildest 87 octane tune.

To top it all off I am getting 2-3 mpg BETTER than before.


I have been running a BlackBear tune since 2010 on mine. Very noticeable improvement vs stock. Turning off the problematic AFM is also a plus.

There is noticeable throttle improvement, especially going about 55, the truck wants to jump to 60 and beyond. Very easy to accelerate in that range, easier than before.
93 octane makes a big difference. I haven't noticed a drastic change, because I filled up the gas tank with 89 and *then* did the tune, not realizing there was no 89 Octane tune. As I gradually replaced 89 with 93 - and I am not done yet - I fill up every 80 miles or so to reduce the time spent on lower octane, which may be harmful - I noticed improved performance.

It will be interesting to see how it runs when I completely replace junk gas I have now with 93 octane, I figured I replaced about half of it.

It's not like the diablo tuner makes it a race car all of a sudden. It's still a heavy truck with a small block V8 that doesn't come close to 6.0L. It really needs 3.73 gears to wake it up among other changes but as for the cost-effectiveness of Diablo, it's very effective. I got one used for 260 and am happy.

There is a forum and you can get replies there quickly, which for me was the decisive factor. You can even send them your logs and they will tune it based on the logs and email you the file.


Also, I just changed the oil in the 5.3L. For some reason I thought the Purolator oil filters I have for 6.0L would fit in 5.3L, I think I misread it. Had to run to Autozone and get a filter when the car was on the jacks. Alas, they don't have anything decent. No Fram ultra protection, nothing good under 15 bucks. Ended up with that Korean filter. Gotta be better than the stock Fram it had in it, and old/used up. 6 quarts of Mobil 1. The dipstick is not accurate.
