got to thinking while watching Fast N' Loud the other day (Bandit car part 2):
While i hope Hollywood just lets this classic be, we all know they remake every movie eventually, once they've beaten the previous franchise for all the money they can squeeze...

so if they do remake Smokey and the Bandit, the first thing that comes to mind, what's the Modern Bandit Car?

Pontiac's gone, so can't be a TA, Mustang and Challenger don't really feel right, and there's just intangible something about the new Camaro that's never appealed to me.

secondly, who's today's Burt Reynolds? or for that matter Jackie Gleason?

and since Coors is available coast to coast now, what's the "contraband" they're running?( a truckload of Yuengling to Texas? )

I'd put Bandit in a WRX or some other hot hatch. Burt was only in a Firebird because that's what they were back then, and what he could buy on short notice. "I'm gonna need a car, a fast car. Faster than that."

The contraband could be cans of R134a and real brake cleaner, headed to california.

Haha..nice post!

I think a lot depends on the director because they have their own style.

For example if Christopher Nolan (Batman, Man of Steel) would probably do a darker version whereas the Coen Brothers may do something closer to the original. These styles would dictate the actors used.

Christian Bale or Johnny Depp????? Barbosa from Pirates of the Caribbean would make a good sheriff...??

An American classic molested by driving rice? I'd boycott on that tidbit alone.

If re-made there just won't be any magic as before. Jackie Gleason and Burt Reynolds just can't be copied. The dukes of hazzard and Starsky and Hutch proved that re-makes just cannot copy the soul those old series' had.
If it was to be re-done the just released mustang is the only car that would fit the mould.
As far as actors go I got nothing. A director would have to clean the slate, and not try to fit the actors into the previous shoes. It would have to be something brand new.

It works fine but there's a $10/can deposit on the stuff out there.

I would say a semi full of Shiner Boch from Tejas to New England, but as far as I know, even THAT is available up thar now.

You'd have to touch a nerve somehow. What are people frustrated with more than anything in this era?

Remember in the 70s everyone hated the 55 mph speed limit and oil embargoes. So we had all these movies... Cannonball Run, Gumball Rally, Smokey.

The modern equivalent would be a bus full of gay people trying to make it to a state where marriage is legal, but only until midnight. Or hot chicks going to Mexico for implants before the "medical tourism" loophole closes.

I'd probably have to put Bandit in an M3. Nothing else makes sense, he needs a fast do-everything car, which is what the M3 does best. Greatest movie ever made though. They'll do it as stupid as possible if they do it though

The best, would be Burt Reynolds stumbles upon a warehouse and finds a stored, still fresh in the factory plastic 1977 untouched Trans Am! :^)

Thats a great point.

Today's Hollywood would just screw up a remake using too much CGI, impossible stunts and explosions, some cheap lovescenes and idiotic side story.

I'm pretty sure that trans am had a 4.9L turbo didn't it.
The 6.6 had unreal torque but rev'd out at 4500 rpm.
