My first job of the day was this fine auto. I stunk like cigarettes the rest of the day..

How can some survive that every day?

My old trucking company didn't have a no-smoking policy in the company trucks. When I first started, I got a truck where the previous driver smoked like a chimney. 8+ hours dealing with the third hand smoke and sweating from no AC (and my sweaty arms picking up the tar residue from the interior surfaces) I almost fu'ed the company.

I’ve never seen a “really bad” smoker’s car up close, but have I got a story.

Way back 28 years or so ago in the early days of online dating, I met a girl on one of the many free sites. I think the big names back then were Lavalife and Matchmaker.

In her photos she looked gorgeous, probably perfect for some people, and she was educated and had a good career. How could she be single?

I made plans for lunch and arrived before she did. She parked a few spaces away and I recognized her immediately. I walked over and sure enough, when she got out of the car she was just as beautiful as she appeared online.

Then I went to walk up to her car to greet her…

Not sure if I saw inside the car or got close enough to smell her first. The floorboards of the car were knee-deep in empty cigarette packs, old butts were scattered about here and there on absolutely every surface, etc. I’ve never seen anything like it before or since. And the lovely young lady smelled like a choking smoke-filled barroom from 20 feet away. Ah, then I knew why she was single!

I soon learned that with online dating “smokes occasionally” means a woman smokes like a chimney and intends to hide it if you don’t approve. And “smokes often” meant the woman rarely smoked but when she did it made her feel guilty and ashamed so she wanted to be up front about it.

I remember one spring day I was behind a guy who was driving and smoking a cigar. All our windows were open. The smell made me sick.
