Smell of synthetic oil fumes

Smells terrible when synthetics vaporize with heat. Like burnt plastic! That's what the bottom of my oil cap smells like now.

I think I know what your talking about. My 98 Caravans valve cover gaskets are leaking a little so when it's hot the engine compartment smells like burnt tranny fluid. I always get nervous and pull the trans dipstick but It smells fine.

I am not sure I have noticed anydifference between the two.

Both will smell when they are burned. Possibly you have oil leakage on the exhaust.

Apso perhaps your EGR bor most likely pvc valve is not working. Remove and shake it if you hear a ball rattle it's ok. Make sure the hose is not blocked. You also may have excessive piston compression leakage (blowby). Might want to do a compression check.

A used oil analysis could help nail down the problem.

When esters vaporize they usually have a "fruity" smell to them.

When PAO vaporizes, it smells more like mineral oil, but not quite as putred.

Both M1 and Amsoil smell the same (no surprise) when they get on the exhaust manifold. I usually accuse my dog of expressing her anal gland. Same odor.
