From reviews I've read the transmission in the Smart is terrible to drive. Delays in shifting and just not a good experience. I had an 87 Sprint with the same size engine (1.0 L, 3 cyl) which could do 90 mph and I usually got around 50 mpg, plus it had a back seat and could carry some luggage....
