SM grade good for '07 Tacoma

Hi everyone,

This is my first post[great site by the way]. Just got my '07 Tacoma 4L dc. I'm in the process of breaking in now (if there is such a thing now). Just dumped the factory oil (at 260K, which were done in high-spirited driving--I drove it like I stole it-- hence, the reason for dumping the oil this early. But, after reading some of the posts, I should've left it in for a wee bit longer. Filled it with Castrol GTX 5W30 and used the amsoil filter Eao 34.
I got a case of older Penzoil 5W30 with SL rating. The owner manual didn't specify the oil rating, it mentioned using 5W30; I'm planning to use it on the next oil changes (maybe 1000K,2500,4000)- then synthetic oil.
From surfing this site, it seems the SL rating has more zinc. I wonder if it's detrimental to the emission stuff, i.e. cats ? I just want to use this oil as a breaking oil. Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

I have an '05 with the 2TR-FE 4cylinder, and I've been using SM grade Pennzoil or SM Havoline since I dumped the factory fill. I believe the oil requirement is SL or later on the 2005. Not sure about the 2007 models as I think Toyota started to change certain engines over to 5W-20 this year. It has to be somewhere in the manual. If it's acceptable, I would run the SL this OCI, and get some SM next time. You mention spirited driving, but I would take it easy as the first 500 miles are break in miles on engine and drivetrain. An incredible amount if heat is generated as parts wear in and low RPMS, low torque, and low speeds are your friend.

I did an oil analysis at 20K with 4500 miles on the pennzoil and everything looked good, except that it sheered down to a 20 weight. A synthetic might help this, but I understand the both the 4cyl and V6 are somewhat tough as far a sheering.

THe 1GR Fe engine that you have requires ILSAC GF3 API SL oil at a minimum. Just run what you got to 5k miles then per the warranty and continue with 5k mile OCI's with any SL or SM 5w30. No need for any fancy break in procedures. Just drive the truck it will break in without babying or dogging it. So use it like you plan on using it every day and don't put too much thought into it other than don't tow until 500 miles.

Just so you know 1K=1000, 260K=260,000. You are fine changeing the oil when you like. No harm done. I would imagine an sl oil will work just fine in terms of protection. You might look closer though in the owners manual, or the Pass Port book that came with your owners manual. I am almost certain it lists a minimul API rateing.

Tons of guys are using GTX on 1GR powered 4runners with no issues.

Good advice, but too late. For better or worse, RICO900's already set the wear patterns for that motor.
