It first started out like Amsoil, a MLM product you sold to your friends and relatives; others if you can talk them into it.
Eventually converted to mass marketing for increased sales and SOPUS purchased the brand.

I think is was in the 70s I remember first seeing it advertised in Popular Mechanics long ago
So SOPUS owns "Slick 50"? Did not know that!
Quaker State bought Slick 50 years ago. Then Pennzoil bought Quaker State and inherited the darn stuff. Then Shell bought Pennzoil/Quaker State and they inherited the darn stuff. Shell tried a couple of years ago to sell it but there were no buyers. It has been reformulated about a half dozen times since it first came out. What ever PTFE is in there now is very little and it is in a soluable form. You don't have to shake it up.
Instead of asking when did it hit the market, the question should be when are they going to get rid of the darn stuff.

That explains why I've seen some "QS with Slick 50" in quarts. Can't remember where.
I'm suprised Shell markets it in any capacity.
Times change. I can remember when Shell reps told us that synthetic was a waste of money and simply a marketing gimmick. Seriously. Of course, Shell didn't have a synthetic ready yet...
Yes. They were the original maker of Slick 50. Quaker State bought Slick 50 from them.
Yep, I remember when QS bought Slick 50, it lowered my opinion of QS even more. When I used QS in the 70s it seemed there was a lot of varnish on the valve train, and it disappeared when I switched brands....
IMO, it is all junk!
It use to only be QS. Last week I saw 4 quarts of pennzoil bundled with Slick 50. I hoped I'd never see that.
I notice on the Quacker Website, they still have the Slick 50 buy as part of their history. They also boast about buying another competitor to Slick 50 - I think they said it was some company that was in third place in the teflon "snake oil" group.

I had a friend that knew an ex-con that sold the stuff door to door in the late 70's
