Should I still use 5W30 or upgrade to 5W40?

Hi all,

I drive an European Volvo V40 of the year 2012. I've used Shell Ultra ETC C3. Why C3? Because I've red that that the better version is for my DPF.

The thing now is, I do like reading about motoroil subjects, but don't have the experience. My Volvo diesel engine (5-cyl) is consuming about 1 litre of oil when I drive it about 6K kilometres (around 3700 miles).

So, should I keep using the 5W30 oil? Or move to 5W40 with the same C3 specs? Thank you!

Any other suggestion is welcome!

You can definitely move and try. As long as it is C3 and preferably MB229.51/52.

Sounds like a good try out case for the new Valvoline restore and protect - supposed to clean rings and all and that would do more to reduce oil burning than moving up to a 40wt.

Volvo of that vintage had low tension piston rings and would develop oil burning. OP seems to be in Europe since he mentioned Shell Ultra ECT oil, that oil is also a C2 oil at the same time. They may not have Valvoline R&P oil there but it'd be a good oil to try for a couple of OCIs to see if rings get free'd up.

Is R&P recommended for diesel? I thought I saw somewhere that it was not supported

If I'm not mistaken Volvo didn't require C3 oil for the engine.
Correct - Volvo went against the conventional approach and specified ACEA A5/B5 for diesels before they launched their own specification. I think they ran large DPFs which were less sensitive to blocking.
