So my 92 Chevy pickup just had a tranny put it 12,000 miles ago. The guy I bought it from had a rebuilt one put in. The fluid looks good but should I do a fluid and filter? Its only been 12,000 but it is a rebuild. Its the only fluid I haven't done. Should I do it or just do it at 30,000 as usual?

I see no reason not to just change it at the regular 30k interval. 21k is not that many miles. Even considering it is a rebuild, I think it a waste of money and time. JMHO

It might not be a bad idea seeing it was a rebuilt unit, there may be some break in particles. Good time to change to a high end fluid like Amsoil ATF if your going to keep it and put 2 bottles of Lubeguard red in it.

Maybe install a Magnefine in-line filter to help remove any break-in wear and any crud that may have entered via the rebuild process, and keep the new fluid cleaner for longer.

I'd replace it, just so you know what is in there. I got a Finicky Chrysler tranny, and 10 k miles after a rebuild and right out of warranty, I was getting horrific shuddering in top gear under light throttle. The fluid looked and smelled perfect. Having a fluid exchange at a Dodge Dealer at the time with ATF +3 eliminated the shudder. Been using ATF +4 ever since, and no tranny issues. Consider the profit motive of the rebuilders. Their bulk, universal tranny fluid is good only for their bottom line, not the longevity of the transmission.

Didn't he say 12k ago or am I misunderstanding the OP?

+1 on the Magnefine. They may have not cleaned the cooler or lines properly when the rebuilt was installed. Never can hurt refreshing some of the fluid, but I doubt its tired.

Yes 12k ago was when it was rebuilt but should I change it now since its now broken in? I hear some guys run type f in their Chevy trannys to wasn't sure what to think of that.

If regular interval is 30k, and severe is 15k, then you would want to change it if it has seen severe service. But otherwise the only way of knowing is an analysis. As it's usually more expensive to replace transmission fluid than oil, maybe in your case it's worth getting the analysis, as you should get a recommendation to change it if not now then in the future.
