Hi,

I need to shorten the length of the rails for a round rail fence. It looks like this:

What is the best way to do it? The fence distributor can do it for $5, but Im trying to reuse some holes from an old chain link fence, and they arent even. So Id like to be able to do it on the fly... I didnt ask them how, but even if they told me, I still need to figure out how to best do it at home...

Thanks!

They have a special tool for it. You can buy a home version for assembling furniture, but it won't be big enough. I'm not sure you'd have something with the power to turn it anyway.

If it were me, I would cut off the fence rail square. Bore a hole in the end with a forstner or spade bit, and use the thickest dowel I could find to make the connection. A 1.5 or 1.25 inch dowel shouldn't be that hard to find.

Best of luck.

Hmmm... Wonder if I used a chisel then... With a little patience, I'd imagine it would cut to that kind of profile fairly easy... Doesn't need to be perfect I guess...
