Short trips & engine wear?

If you can get the engine all the way warmed up to a 195*F water temp on at least one of the trips during that day, that will go a long ways towards keeping your oil free of moisture.

Cold motor oil + moisture in the absence of adequate ventilation = sludge.

Hey PT1
We were looking at replacing our 04 Tahoe with one of the new Tahoe hybrids (they use the 6.0) can you expand on the warming up before leaving the dway?

I understand that short trips where the engine does not reach operating temperature breaks down oil. Does this harm the engine as well if oil is changed often enough? How many miles would you have to drive after warming up to be free of fuel in the oil?

Short trips dump more fuel into the oil as start up cycles use more fuel to get the engine warm. This thins the oil and can interfere with additives. Cold oil is also not the best situation for AW additive "activation". These additives like warm/hot oil for best protection.

I think he's referring to the fact that some of these engines have piston slap, so he would idle the engine longer to let it warm up before pulling away. (and there really is no need to do that)

I think that you are talking about the 6.2 with the DOD switchable valvetrain. Good motor but my 6.0 has start up ticking that makes me insane. Nobody can tell me what it is. I have 3 different opinions between piston slap, cold fuel injector tick,or a leaky lifter. Once it hits 160 degrees it's quiet as a mouse...so I am probably going to chalk it up to piston slap. If your 04 doesn't knock or slap I would re-think trading it until you go past 200k on the clock.

Get it detailed and new tires and maybe even some new wheels from ebay and keep driving it. JMHO
