I have a 1994 Ford Tempo with the 2.3 4-cylinder engine and im wondering if i could use Shell Rotella T 15w-40 with no problems? The reason i want to use a thick oil is cuz my car needs it cuz for one it has about 180,000 miles(maybe higher?) on the engine and the rings are going bad in it cuz i have bad compression and blowby in my air intake box (im not the orginal owner of the car so lord knows what its been thru). The other thing is i do a 3-4 hour long NEWSPAPER ROUTE every day. so far the car is still kicking after adding 20,000 miles of stop and go newspaper delivery. Right now im using Castrol High Milage 10w-40 but after reading up that 10w-40 oils have less lubrication and more tendency to sheer than 15w-40 oils, i definitly want to switch. I dont want to use a 20w-50 oil cuz i want good gas milage. So my options are Shell Rotella T, and well Shell Rotella T! For some unknown reason this is the only 15w-40 oil available in my area!( I live in West Virginia) and its sold at a Gomart for crying out loud! Anyways i was just wondering if this oil and a Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter would be a good combo for my car?

If you like to experiment, before you change the oil try an overnight piston soak with Mobil 1 20 weight. 2 teaspoons in each sparkplug hole. You can use a mini transmission funnel.

Be carefull not to hydro-lock the motor when you start it up.

15w-40 is a good choice for your conditions.

I think the Rotella should do a good job in that engine. I ran Delo 15W40 in my Escort last summer, and oil consumption was completely cured.

I went to 5W30 Motorcraft for the winter, and oil consumption was still reduced--probably from some cleaning of stuck rings which the Delo was able to effect.

I stop at the GoMart in Beckley from time to time. Any GoMart which has truck parking will probably carry the Rotella--so it'll be easy to find.

In the very cold winter I would go with a 5W30 such as Motorcraft or Havoline. That'll give you good cold weather starting and better cold start protection.

But now that summer's almost here, yes, go with the Rotella.

I had a 1985 Ford Tempo and I ran Castrol Syntec 5W50 in it! I never had an oil related problem with the oil!

Sounds to me like you are an excellent candidate for a double AutoRX treatment. Look into it - may help with the compression / blowby condition.

Do you start the car up a lot, or do you leave it running most of the route? If you start it up a lot, I'd recommend Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40. But if you don't do a lot of cold starting on your route (like you only start-up at the beginning), then the 15W-40 oils should do great.
