Spector, I agree with what you say, another thing to factor in too, is that after you finally realize what viscosity works best with your car, then the engine gets more miles on it and therefore most likely needs a thicker oil. So then you start playing all over again with that.

But at least with what we are doing here we get closer to discovering what works better than others. I keep telling people that there truly is no best oil, no one size fits all. A lot of the top oils are so close in engine wear numbers that it all boils down to personal preference, price and availability.

But finding the holy grail sure would be nice. As long as there are no killer bunnies along the way! Run away! Run away!

Ken,

You're running a thicker oil film at the expense of pumping losses.

Shell HU may not need a moly if the're using the new set of ester AW and FM modifiers.

As I have stated elsewhere, if a new AW or FM comes along that is better (and cheaper) than moly, oil companies and blenders will use it.

Well isn't that a bad thing? The UOA seems to show the engine is running great w/ this oil, but in the US 5W-20 or some super thin oil would be required.

You have CAFE. He doesn't nor do we or the rest of the world for that matter. Look at his wear numbers and tell me he and the rest of the world have it wrong compared to U.S CAFE mandated thin oils? The 2 best analysis I've personally seen here were 5W40 or therabouts (this one and a Redline 5W40 somebody used in a turbo). All the top syns here and Singapore are 5W40 (except Mobil 1).
