setting idle?

well i have been reading my repair book for my 91 honda accord FI I4 2.2L and i been adjusting my idle with the throttle cable. thats the cable that is connected with the gas pedal. well i read the book and it said that the idle should be adjusted by a screw on the intake manifold. it siad that i must first disconect the IAC and then adjust it. when i disconneted the IAC the idle went very low. i was trying to read my volatage meter on what was the speed of the RPM but it never changed. it stayed at 11.50. the book said to raise it i should turn the screw and when i did i felt the engine;s rpm go higher but the voltage stayed the same. the book said that the voltage would change, im not sure now. so i adjusted it to where i was before and just left it there. anyone had any experiances with adjusting idle??

If I remember, the IAC that you disconnected is a selenoid?, to adjust the idle you are moving a mechanical component that has no voltage feedback therefore should not get any change in Vcc. The Vcc you're reading is the applied Vcc to engage the selenoid which will not change as it is either on or off, high or low, 1 or 0 if you know what I mean.

From what you are describing, I don't think it was refering to changing the Vcc when you adjust but the idle rpm.

thanks for replying!! well here is what my book says..

(btw the prong that i put the voltage tester in was a blue wire that monitors rpm)

-if the idle speed is too low or too high adjust it by disconnecting the electrical connector from the idle air control (IAC) valve and pry out the concealment plug from the top of the throttle body.

-turn the screw to obtain the speciified idle speed for your car.
-plug the electrical connector to the IAC valve and remove the 7.5 amp back up fuse from underhood fuse block for ten seconds..this will clear any trouble codes from ecm's memory.
-turn on the engine and let it set for one minute then recheck the idle speed
-turn off the engine and disconnect the tachometer. reinstall the concealment plug.

maybe i have the wrong setting on my volage meter...when i tested the volatage for the battery it worked...came up to 13.5 v. i hope i kinda cleared my statement up.

I can help you with this as I have done several times on my Honda. First get the engine to normal operating temp. Second once the engines is at a normal temp and while it is at idle, disconnect the idle air control valve(IAC)connector on the back of the throttle body. This is difficult but possible, I have used a couple of 6 inch screwdrivers to do this, one to pry out the tab holding the connector to the valve, the other to push the connector off the IAC valve its self. Then adjust the idle screw making sure you have all the accessories (lights, AC, ECT)turned off while you do this. Just look at a tach that you hook up to the car or use the tach in the dash (the one in the dash isn't the most accurate but it's better than nothing and your really looking and listening to the engine its self to steady out anyway).You should only have to turn it 1/4 to 1/2 turn max as a little bit of adjustment on this screw means a lot. Once you have its set where you want, shut the car off, reset the ECU by pulling the "backup" fuse from the fuse box for at least 5min then reinstall it, this box on my car is under the hood on my car, 91 Integra, yours should be similar. After you have done this retook up the IAC valve connector, start the car and check the idle, first with all the accessories off, then turn on the lights, then AC the idle should return to what you set it at within one min of turning on these accessories. It may take you a few attempts to get the idle set to where you like it. Good luck

well i did it..it was fairly simple. i readjusted my throttle cable so that it wouldnt be loose...well i drove it around for a day and now my idle went lower. should i re-do it again??
