How old are the houses in your neighborhood ?
The further west you go the better it gets. Even then I've heard of problems with theft etc out there. Most houses in this area was built in the 40-50's.

Give the house back to the bank and you wont be getting another mortgage for 7 years, best case.
32k homes is absurd. Why are they so low, is there absolutely nothing to do in KS?
You dont need to have any appreciable income to afford to mortgage a $30-50k home. If I were looking to retire cheaply, this is where Id be snapping up a property. Who/what else is going on there that makes it no good? Illegals? You mentioned crime. No decent private schools?
Right now with just my pay middle $30's. The wife will return to work next year maybe sooner. Debt wise it's just medical bills everything is paid for besides the house. I'm not really worried about getting another mortgage for another 7 years.. there's ways I can get around that.
There's just so many houses around here. Alot of the mexicans are now moving elsewhere. Illegals probably most of them are. This area is like a staging ground for moving elsewhere. Buy a cheap house save up your money and move elsewhere. Mostly it's crime and the city doesn't seem to care about putting money in this area. Can't comment on the schools they've did alot of cutting lately in KS. It was up to me I wouldn't of bought it but the wife had it before we were married.
