I saw this in the Bay Area a couple of days ago.

I drove my wife's sister's Prius (not this one) while staying there, and really liked it - it's been very reliable for them, and is very easy on gas. Meets my definition of a cool car!

That is a good one. I used to not be a fan of the Prius but over the years in my area you sure see a lot of them as a commuter car and even as cabs. My brother used to be a big Honda guy but after 2 not so good Hondas in a row he bought a Prius he is now on his 2nd one and they have worked out well. Very few issues. I've driven both of them and they are good cars just a little small for my tastes. I think the lastest fifth generation ones at least look much better. I can see why so many commuters that drive a lot buy them.

Ever since I learned how relatively easy it is to maintain/replace the NiMH battery packs in the Prius is, my main concern went away.

As long as you don't mind a gutless and moderately noisy ride, they're great. My wife's just turned over 112k and still has plenty of material left on the original brake pads. There's little to no maintenance to do beyond oil changes. Spark plugs at 120k, coolant, trans axle fluid every 70k.

I was interested to see two separate coolant reservoirs - one for the gasoline engine, as expected, but also one for the inverter's cooling system.

Both used Toyota's pink Super Long-Life Coolant.

The coolant is rated for 10 years and 150,000 miles.

My sons 2015 Prius has 210,000 miles and still runs great. His job pays him a salary plus 65 cents a mile car allowance. His Prius typically averages around 45 mpg.

Asked a cab driver how he liked his Prius, which I could see had over 600,000 km’s on it. He said “It’s great! I can make a living now because it’s so good on fuel. My previous cab was a Crown Vic”. He also said that the hybrid battery was still good, even at that high mileage.

Unless your the Prius owner who transplanted a Harley Davidson V twin into one. That really ticked off the Prius crowd.

Interesting user community. Turns out a lot of people who own full-size pickups own one for commuting.

Prius V [wagon]. Daughter took it to college. She’d give her roommates a ride to shopping, and they’d each give her $2. She’d drive back to Boston for free. We have winter tires for it, does OK but not much ground clearance.

Replaced engine with a used one at 175,000. Pretty common problem with Gen 3.

We saw a Gen 2 Prius in Cambridge with four Elizabeth Warren stickers on the back….

We have a hybrid minivan which means we drive around in the uncoolest of the uncool. Never once saw another family in a Tahoe and thought “man, they’re so much cooler than us - how do we become friends.”
What those SUV parents don’t realize is that while they are pretending to be single, everyone who sees them thinks “there’s a couple of kids back there.”

Our neighbors have three small kids. We have three big kids: 5’7, 5’11, 6’4. We explained that our 2016 Tahoe (bought for towing)third row didn’t fit adults and the minivan was infinitely more practical and comfortable. But no way they were going to buy a minivan.
