ok so i want to refurbish my finish. its a jeep cherokee with deep amathest pearl coat. Here are my plans. note: all with walmart buffer. Clean with mix of carwash soap and viniger, Buff entire finish with scratch x, buff entire finish with megs cleaner wax, buff finish with turtle platinum? question is, will the scratch X take car of what the clay bar would have done. Im not going for hardcore gloss, but i just want it to look new for a long time. whgat do you think of this regiment?

ScratchX will more than likely not remove bonded contaminates. About the only thing that will remove bonded contaminate would be a clay bar and some quik detailer. I would think your combo would work just fine. Only thing I question is the vinegar. I feel the only thing that should be used to wash a car is car wash soap, car wash soap will not hurt plastic, rubber, adhesives used on decals or moldings and so on.

id rather use 3m fine cut rubbing compound instead of scratch x for the entire car.
i used it for my van by hand and it gave good results plus, i didnt have to do a claybar =).

so scratch x does not really do much does it? and you suggest 3m fine cut? i really want to skip the clay bar step and im hoping that the polish compund will do so. i also have some turtle wax dry rubbing compound in both white and heavy duty?
A clay bar is a different tool than polishing or cleaning compound on a buffer.
A clay bar will grab and removed crud that is stuck in the finish while barely touching the paint. Compound on a buffer conforms to the surface to a much larger extent, including the bits of crud embeded in the paint. You will take off a lot more paint to get the crud out of the paint with a buffer and compound.
A clay bar is far better at getting the bits of crud out of the paint and does much less damage to the paint.
I really think you should try the claybar- you will be AMAZED at the results
. It makes the finish so slippery and nice. Also, skipping it leaves the danger that one of your polishing steps will in fact pop some gritty particle out of the paint and then hold it against the finish while you merrily buff away. Not what you're looking for

Yup, do the clay-bar first. Get all the contamination out first, before buffing it in...
Are you good with a buffer? I'd thought that took quite a bit of practice. True or not? Tnx,
Depends on the buffer. An orbital buffer is a cinch to use. The straight rotary ones are better from a perfomance standpoint, but very unforgiving of mistakes, as in, "destroy your paint job if you screw it up" unforgiving...
Tnx. I was wondering since I see soooo many cars with the "buffed look". Seems like I see it a lot on dark SUVs. I'm real sensitive to any swirls on my car, so buffers have always scared me.
