Schaeffer oil response to API SP

I wrote to Schaeffer to see when they were rolling out the new spec in the 7000 line. Here is the response.

And this is the first I’ve heard of an upcoming “Dexos 1, Gen 3” formula arriving next year.

Is the Gen 3 supposed to somehow “align” with API SP?

After previously saying it would release Dexos1 Gen 3 in January and begin commercial licensing during the second quarter, General Motors is considering revising the schedule to push back at least some of the timing. The company plans to announce its decision soon.

Yes. It's been delayed. I think it was planned for around the time of SP GF-6. GM has been unable to push ILSAC to the levels they desire. They couldn't even get them to G2 levels on GF-6.

I suspect D1G3 will coincide with the rollout of common 15,000 OCI for GM Vehicles.

Given a choice of Dexos Gen 2 or GF-6 (SP) in a given viscosity , is Gen 2 the go to choice?

To me it is. But I doubt you will be faced with that choice. I suspect all the D1G2 oils produced for the US Market will be SP GF-6 so you get both.
