Any thoughts on the tbn besides lab error?

I talked with the lab- they stated there method of TBN measurement measures 1-1.5 points below what most oil manufacturers would use as values on their spec sheets. Lab recommended a lower limit of 2.5 as a condemnation #. Now to see how it holds up in service. I'm sure it will do fine.

Schaeffer's always has a low TBN, but they have great TBN retention. That oil will handle 10,000 mile OCIs with ease.

That's what I'm thinking too, badtlc. The numbers made more sense to me after I talked to the lab, and I know this oil should be more than capable of handling the 7500 mile oci's I have planned in my wife's Rogue. She will be driving a lot so 7500 will go by fairly quickly.

I just sent sample in today of Schaeffer 5w20 with 8250 miles from wife's 03 accord. I will post results. Car was responsive and got good gas mileage with schaeffer's compared with redline run previously. I wanted to run a little longer, but had snow tires put on car and just decided to have oil changed as well.

Yeah I don't trust ANA labs. Especially the Phosphorous #. Maybe send a sample to another lab.

Virgin TBN's often read low on $20 used oil analysis. There was one posted, lab was 11, mfr claims 13. Some folks were pointing the finger at the oil company!!

I will be looking forward to seeing your report. Is your 5w-20 recently purchased SM? I'm interested to see if the add pack is similar.

I've been using ANA Labs for several years, this is the 1st Tbn I've gotten back that raised an eyebrow. I don't intend to resample, I'll just wait and test an in service sample to see how the tbn holds up.

As for the phos., I'm wondering if there has been a formulation change recently-note the sodium (and I believe increased moly over other samples I've seen). Consistency in future samples will tell, I guess.

BTW, for me $20 covers two of these kits, including the TBN.

It is the 5w20 SM oil, but purchased at least 6 months ago, and I think Schaeffer's 5w20 oil has always been an SM oil since it is relatively new compared with the other series 7000 oils.
