Ray,
For 2005, the Cobalt and the ION both use the GM 4T45E transmission, which specifys Dexron III-H ATF for a 50,000 mile drain interval under severe service, and lifetime fill (150,000) under normal service.
The Cobalt didn't exist in 2004, so its out of the question. But Saturn no longer used the "different" transmission after 2004.
To answer the original question, the transmission takes an Aisin Warner T-4 fluid. Toyota transmissions are now produced by Aisin Warner, and use the same fluid. Most Toyota dealers sell the fluid under the Toyota T-IV label for $4-$5/qt. The Mobil 3309 fluid is the only other "approved" fluid that I know of. Amsoil, Specialty Formulations, Pennzoil, and Valvoline all sell reverse-engineered formulas for the Toyota T-IV application under the "Universal ATF," "Autoglide Toyota T-IV," "Multi-Vehicle ATF," and "Mercon V" product names, respectively.
