I want to change the ATF in a 2004 Saturn ION with a 2.2 engine. I think it has the Aisin-Warner transaxle. It calls for Saturn T-IV fluid which I believe is the Mobil 3309. I have been to all my local auto supply stores and have yet to find any in stock. I have also searched online and can not find where to buy any. Are any of the syn ATF approved for use in my tranny?

You can get this fluid much cheaper from a Toyota dealership than you can get it from Saturn. I'm not aware of any aftermarket outlets that sell this fluid.

That is what I have found. I was hoping someone would know of some place to buy it besides going to a dealer or if there is a approved alternative fluid.

Ray,
For 2005, the Cobalt and the ION both use the GM 4T45E transmission, which specifys Dexron III-H ATF for a 50,000 mile drain interval under severe service, and lifetime fill (150,000) under normal service.

The Cobalt didn't exist in 2004, so its out of the question. But Saturn no longer used the "different" transmission after 2004.

To answer the original question, the transmission takes an Aisin Warner T-4 fluid. Toyota transmissions are now produced by Aisin Warner, and use the same fluid. Most Toyota dealers sell the fluid under the Toyota T-IV label for $4-$5/qt. The Mobil 3309 fluid is the only other "approved" fluid that I know of. Amsoil, Specialty Formulations, Pennzoil, and Valvoline all sell reverse-engineered formulas for the Toyota T-IV application under the "Universal ATF," "Autoglide Toyota T-IV," "Multi-Vehicle ATF," and "Mercon V" product names, respectively.

Thanks!

Called two Saturn dealers today. They wanted $6.50 for the trans gasket and $16 per QUART for the ATF . Got the gasket and went to a Toyota dealer and got the ATF for $4.95 a quart. Now I know why they are called stealerships.
