Same filter for an I4 and a V6?

How is it that our 2001 Honda Civic EX has the exact same filter as our 2010 Nissan Frontier SE?

I checked Purolator, Wix, and Fram and they all list the same filter for each vehicle. That seems like either overkill for the 4 cylinder or underkill for the 6. It's a mighty small filter in either case and just doesn't seem right.

Not surprising. For many years, back in the day. Ford specified the same oil filter, an FL1A, for everything from a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder to their 460 cubic inch V-8.

Most Honda and Nissan use the same filter spec (thread, gasket, pressure, flow, etc) so I'd not be surprise. Even the ones being different are only due to ADBV opening pressure.

If you're worried about it, they used to spec a larger filter than the current model. I only remember it was the Amsoil EaO20 model instead of the EaO13 they use currently. Cross reference the Amsoil EaO20 with the brand/model of your choice and enjoy the peace of mind a larger filter brings.

yes, those filters fit many imports.

There have been threads on here questioning the need for an oil filter.
Once the engine is broken in, if reasonable OCIs are observed, you don't see much in a cut open filter.

I have no idea but my 02 Civic EX share the same filter as my 06 Pathfinder. This makes it easy when buying filters in bulk.

Look at the "Help with L14610 / PH7317 Sizing" thread for some other ideas, too. That filter fits my John Deere diesel stuff, Honda GoldWing motorcycles, etc., etc...

the oil filter for my Mazda 3 spin on filter is the same size for my 20HP Kohler engine riding lawn mower.

Both engines probably use the same amount of oil (4-ish quarts?) so the number of cylinders really does not have much to do with it.

Toyota's current engines, with cartridge filters, use the same element, whether is a 2GR-FE V-6 engine or a 2AR-FE I-4 engine. Bottom_Feeder is right: the filter element is filtering roughly the same amount of oil, so the number of cylinders has little to do with it.

My 2.2 OHV Cavalier uses the same filter as the 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, and 3.8 V-6. Might also be used on some V-8's...not sure about that one. '3387A' filter.

Because the flow, efficiency, and size criteria were met by that filter for those multiple applications.

Since you seem to be familiar with the Wix site, do you ever look at the "all applications" window? You'd be suprised at what filters go onto.

It's also the oil filter used on the Daewoo Leganza I maintain.

2.2 DOHC if I remember correctly. I know it's DOHC, just not 100% on the liters.
