Salicylates in lubricants are mainly detergents but there can also be salicylate dispersants.

Salicylate detergents are nothing new but improved versions, called styrenated-Salicylic Acid types of calcium and magnesium salts have been developed to better suspend carbonaceous deposits in diesel oils and bunker oils, and with higher TBN's.

In most cases, the salicylate detergent contains both calcium and magnesium metals.
