Hi Guys,

Any experience with gear oils in a Saab 900 (1990 MY) with manual transmission? I know they recommend an engine oil there, however after visiting one of the oil manufacturer's websites here is the product that their oil selector displayed:

https://www.ravenol.de/en/products/usage/d/Product/show/p/ravenol-mtf-3-sae-75w.html

They also suggested TSG SAE 75W-90 as a second option, but I believe this one has too high viscosity.

I have heard some people use the Honda MTF with good results, but I am open for suggestions.

There is also a middle option, i.e. 75W-80 which may be most suitable.

10W30 is closer to 75W80 and 75W85;
10W40 is closer to 75W90.
75W may be fine in low speed and cold winter regimes though .

That was also my thinking. Strangely the oil selector on the website suggests two products: 75W or 75W-90 (but no 75W-80, which they also do).

Back when I had a 91 900 turbo, I had 15-40 fleet oil in it. The motor oil is because of the syncro material they used.

The owner's manual states it should be either engine oil (10W30 or 40) or SAE EP75 API GL-4 or GL-5. I thought the gear oil would be more suitable...

An HDEO in 10W30 or 15W40 would do fine in the said 1990's trans, but I too would prefer a dedicated MTF for the manual transmission.
Having said this, I wouldn't pick an EP 75W GL4/5 for components protection as its viscosity resembles that of a 0W16 (HDEO, if there is one).
Noting your ambients, I would select amongst a GL4 or GL5 in 75W90 > 75W85 > SAE 80 > 75W80 .

Yeah, I noticed that and that's why I thought a 75W-80 would be OK.
