"In a competition for resources, problems that involve the use of military force cannot be excluded that would destroy the balance of forces close to the borders of the Russian Federation and her allies," said the document, which maps out Russia's security strategy until 2020.

"The attention of international politics in the long-term perspective will be concentrated on the acquisition of energy resources," the paper said.

I have never for one moment bought into this warm and fuzzy [censored] that we're all friends now that the Cold War is over. Russia is still very much anti-west and anti-USA. They cannot be trusted. I hope oil prices remain low long enough to hobble their economy. Most of their leadership is former KGB members. What does that tell you?

Well, after the Cold War, we quickly rushed into Eastern Europe and the former Soviet states and offered them a path to NATO membership; considering Russia's well founded fear (shown in history) of invasion, it was probably not a bright move.

I'm sure that a comparable document, among many, sit somewhere in the Pentagon/CIA/Army War College "what if" exercises....

$215B p.a. for the military to secure acces to M.E. oil would indicate that other countries are playing also.

CHINA and RUSSIA do military maneuvers together , wonder what's up with that ? Just to share recipes ? ;- )

things are getting a little more heated where the ice is melting , making for easier access to explore for oil and natural gas . NORWAY and RUSSIA are not on good terms . Think it's in the international court . The race is on . RESOURCES make for more power to RUSSIA , not so much NORWAY .

They were sharing military tech since 1949. Nothing new other than now China has the money to buy and Russia wants to sell.

It wasn't always a voluntary "sharing".
The PLA museum in Beijing has some Russian tanks and other equipment that Russia "shared" with China in a border skirmish in the 1960s.

d189379, rumors? You haven't watched the news much this week with the bashing of Cheney.

Getting back on topic, it wouldn't be out of the question that Russia, in it's quest for energy resources to sell, will mount some sort of offensive in the arctic circle area.

Scratch that, Russian will just have a meeting with certain leaders of this country to agree to hand over those lands to enviro causes so they won't have to worry about the pesky U.S. military protecting it.

I was so looking forward to a plague. War is so materially wasteful. It's kinda like ethanol. You spend 60% of the spoils in the making.

I thought the WMD's were rumors?

Russia has plenty of natural resources. They are having problems developing their existing fields, let alone invading countries for new ones.

One of the most heavily fortified borders in the world is a Russia-Sino border. Look up Amur (Blagoveschensk) conflict, back in the 70's. Started with border guards shooting at each other and progressed to a small scale war.
Russians do not trust Chinese. They might be "playing" together now, but only because both see us, US, as a threat.
Russia might have enough natural resources, but they want to control ACCESS to other countries' resources, that was one of the reasons for Georgia-Russian conflict.

BTW, Russia already laid claim to the continental shelf in the Arctic. A couple of years ago their sub planted a flag on Lomonosov Ridge under the Arctic ocean.

USA!! USA!!
we stepped on the BEARS toes by invading IRAQ . If I remember correctly , RUSSIA had interests in the oil and had money ties from selling military goods . Didn't help our long term ties .

Isn't that the fundamentals relationship between every nation on earth?

it's a CHESS match . The new war in not all through military means , it's also economics . I wouldn't be stunned if RUSSIA , CHINA , and their acquaitances ( IRAN , etc. ) share a secret agreement to this cause . Doesn't help that our own government and corporations are assisting with their ( RUSSIA , others ) agenda through greed . Having the military ( active or not ) scattered all over the globe is putting a strain on the money vein . Many are educated here ( economics , military , etc. ) and take their knowledge abroad to use against us . Ain't that a kick in the teeth . ;- ) So , we as individuals need to apply better use of resources and pay more taxes ( like it or not ) for education and hope for the best . :- (

True, but how many times did we fight England or France in the last 100 years? Soviet Union/Russia believed and trained for war with China since Khruschev became Secretary-General of Russia and he and Mao had a fall out. Chinese were seen as lower-priority threat than USA, but a threat serious enough to warrant stationing millions of troops on the border, and fortifying/mining the border.

CHINA and RUSSIA just struck a deal for a pipeline . So , not too strained of an relationship .
